COALMONT - Roy C. Klein, 83, of South Bend and formerly of Coalmont, passed away peacefully at 4 a.m. Saturday, July 1, 2006, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in South Bend. Roy had lived in the South Bend and Granger areas for over 60 years. He was born in Coalmont on April 25, 1923. Surviving Roy are his wife of 61 years, Gale "Fridge" Vaughn Klein; a daughter, Gale "Skip" Johnson; his grandson, a Mishawaka police officer, Roman Gabriel Johnson; nieces and nephews; and numerous relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; baby daughter, Mary Ann; son-in-law, Darrell Johnson; two sisters and three brothers.
He graduated from Coalmont High School, he was loved and will be missed. In his teens, Roy was a Golden Gloves Boxing Champion in Jasonville, receiving the honors of being in competition in Terre Haute, where he placed high. He grew up across from the entrance to Shakamak State Park. He was an avid outdoors sportsman, enjoying hunting and fishing immensely, whether it be pheasant hunting in the St. Louis area, small game and deer in south central Indiana, Greene County, or a trip to Michigan, with his boat to bring home a few meals of fish, a true delight. Roy was a family man. He loved his family dearly. A round of golf with grandson, Roman, made a fun day, while enjoying a stay at their cabin on Lake Freeman. Vacations with family, whether visiting relatives here in Indiana or to the coast of Waikiki, Hawaii, with his dear wife, Gale, made him very happy, and they had another trip in the making, this being their sixth trip to Honolulu, celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary in August. A very fond memory for the family, and the most recent trip traveling together, was to Branson, Mo., and on to Memphis, Tenn., for a few days of fun.
He served his country during World War II. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp, during which time he was stationed on Guam, in the South Pacific, with the B-29 Squad. After his discharge, he came to South Bend, working as a carpenter. Upon retiring, he had presided for 30 years as president of Carpenter's Local 413. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave, South Bend. The Rev. Ed Erskin, pastor of Northway Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, in Granger. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
Contributions, in memory of Roy Klein, may be made to the American Heart Association, 3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago, IL 60674.
