Audrey Rosamond "Rose" Schmanski
April 3, 1929 - April 6, 2012
SOUTH BEND - Audrey Rosamond "Rose" Schmanski passed away at her home on Good Friday, April 6th, after a sudden but brief struggle with liver cancer, with granddaughter, Pam, and daughter-in-law, Tracy, at her side. She was born in Walkerton, Indiana, to the late Clem and Sarah Tuttle on April 3, 1929, just in time to enjoy the beginnings of the Great Depression. She later moved to South Bend where she remained a lifelong resident, and took much pride in keeping her own home. She was affectionately known as "Rose" or "Rosie," and "Grandma Rose" by family, friends and her grandchildren. She loved traveling to see her family throughout the United States, and did so often. Rosie leaves behind three children and their wives to cherish their lifelong memories of her, Leonard (Ramona) of Huntsville, Alabama, Larry (Tracy) of Torrance, California, and Terry (Liz) of Arizona. Her loving daughter, Janice (Rey) Neid, preceded her in death in October 1994. She was also blessed with grandchildren, Pam (Jay) Mummey of South Bend, Dylan in Torrance, California, Sarah of Arizona, and Jeramey (Katie) of Georgia; along with great-grandchildren, Jake and Ally. A dearly loved grandson, Adam Cole Schmanski, was called home in 1999. They will always remember her sense of humor (almost always tinged with a bit of sarcasm), her humility, her strength of character, and what seemed like eternal youthfulness and energy. Rosie was raised in a large family with 13 brothers and sisters who have all remained close throughout the years. Surviving her are three brothers, Richard (Sharon) of Warsaw, Indiana, Stanley (Bonnie) of Phoenix, Arizona, and Jerry of Cassopolis, Michigan. She was preceded in death by sisters, June, Helen, Ruth, Connie and Maryland; brothers, Howard, Ray, Jim, Bob and Tom; and her husband, Leonard. She had worked at the old Oliver Hotel when first moving to South Bend, as a cashier, and later at Tuesley's drug store on South Bend's west side. At her request, there will be no visitation or viewing, but if you would like to make a special effort to do something nice for a loved one, that would be appropriate and appreciated by those who knew Rosie. The family would like to thank all at Hospice who so gently cared for and supported Rosie at her end time, and would ask that any donation be forwarded there. Memorials to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
