===============

Eloi Etier was born to Louis Etier and Marie-Josephe Poitras in St-Roch-de-l'Achigan, a farming community about 40 miles north of Montreal. He was their 11th of 13 children. His obituary and his gravestone incorrectly stated the date of his birth, which was 1841. He joined his brother Louis in South Bend, Indiana about 1859, about 10 years after Louis had immigrated to South Bend. Eli married Clarissa Lafontaine, the sister of Julia Lafontaine who had married Eli' brother Louis Etier Hickey, on August 14, 1859. Louis and Julia were their witnesses. Eli and his brother both changed their surnames from Etier to Hickey about that time. Eli, like his brother, was a carpenter, and spent his early years in South Bend working for Alexis Coquillard. He enlisted with the 147th Regiment of the Illinois Infantry during the Civil War and was honorably discharged after one year of service in 1866. Eli and Clarissa had 15 children, many of whose descendents still reside in the South Bend area. He, his wife and many family members are buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. Other unlinked children include: Clarissa Clara Mary Hickey Smith [61715825]; Benjamin Hickey [80421273].
