She was born at home on New Road, Lakeville, St Joseph County, Indiana on October 25, 1921 to the late Frank and Maude (Strickler) Howell, the 6th of 7 children. After her father died, she was adopted at age 3 by the late Christian W and Verna (Simpson) Anderson. In November, 1938 she married Hamilton LaRue Donathen who preceded her in death on April 22, 1981. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Malinda Howell Ewing; and by brothers Walter, Reuben and Kenneth Howell. Mrs Donathen is survived by her daughters, Lucy Diane Clady and Beth Elaine Donathen, both of South Bend and Peggy Lee Patton of Mishawaka; her son, David Christian Donathen of South Bend; her grandson, Scott A (Melissa) Donathen of Ashton, Idaho; a great-grandchild, Aiden Scott Donathen; a sister, B Marie (Howell) Kline of South Bend; and a brother, Don Howell of Plymouth, IN. She was a lifetime member of Maple Grove United Methodist Church. She was active in United Methodist Women, Evangelism Committee, and choir. She was a Sunday School teacher for more than 60 years and youth director for 5 years. The first year of the church's Country Store Bazaar in 1954, she sold dill pickles, on the front porch of the Guy Welsh home during a snowstorm. For decades, she chaired the Bake counter. At age 90, in October 2011, she participated as a greeter. Lucille was a loving wife, mother, and homemaker. She enjoyed working and organizing several Home Demonstration Clubs with Esther Singer and Mamie Barlow's leadership. She also made arrangements for a "day touring Chicago" each year by bus, for ladies from these clubs. She organized her own Jolly Jills Home Extension Club in 1945 which continued until 1988. Lucille was a blessing to her community and neighborhood of North Liberty for 33 and a half years, moving to South Bend in 1976 due to their former farm and home becoming a part of Potato Creek State Park. She spent many years lobbying the Indiana State Legislature to prevent eminent domain of her home and to preserve Porter-Rea Cemetery. While her children were in school, she actively supported the Parent Teachers Association and Band Boosters. She and her husband owned the Donathen Strawberry Farm on Osborne Road, in both North Liberty and Lakeville.
