Patricia A. Steiner
April 28, 1932 - Jan. 13, 2022
Patricia A. (Steiner) Laskowski, 89, passed away on Thursday Jan. 13, 2022, at Hamilton Grove in New Carlisle after a long illness. Patricia was born in South Bend on April 28, 1932, to the late Harriet (Szymanski) and Joseph Steiner. She lived in South Bend her entire life, graduating from South Bend Catholic High School and working at Bendix, Studebaker and the Telephone Answering Service. She could type faster than the “Army’s fastest typist” (aka her husband). Patricia married the love of her life, Donald A. Laskowski, on Sept. 14, 1957. They had grown up together in the same “old neighborhood” in the shadows of the Oliver factory on South Bend’s west side. They attended the same grades in the same schools, and later were both members of the St. Hedwig Church choir, who tossed sheet music over the newlyweds from the choir loft instead of rice. She was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend, and she lived life exclusively for her family, from her mother, father, busia and great-grandmother, to a large contingent of aunts, uncles, cousins and in-laws, all who lived within blocks of each other. To the end of her life, “home” to her was the house on Dunham Street. But Pat and Don’s home of 63 years on Evergreen Lane was her real domain, and the back yard became a magnet for the neighborhood children, her five as well as all their friends. She loved babies, not just her own. She clipped photos of random toddlers out of magazines to decorate the refrigerator, not to mention decorating the house with family photos of her own children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She never missed a band concert, or musical performance, when her children were involved, and her applause was long and loud. Every Memorial Day, the family would gather at Ford Street and Sheridan for the annual parade, and she’d wave her sunshine yellow jacket over her head so the Washington High School drum majors (her kids!) could whistle the band to play as they passed. Patricia was preceded in death - by just two months - by her husband of 64 years, Donald. We know that he was at the gates of Heaven, waiting to welcome her and dance again as they always loved to do. Patricia was also preceded in death by her brother, Ronald Steiner. She is survived by her children, Lawrence (Celeste) Laskowski, Kathryn Laskowski (David Hogerty), Judith (Doug) Brown, Mark (Jennifer) Laskowski, and Ellen (Carl) Jungck; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday Jan. 19, 2022, at St. Joseph Funeral Home, with a Rosary to be prayed at 6 p.m. A final visitation is scheduled at 10 a.m. Thursday Jan. 20 at St. Hedwig Catholic Church, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery with a short indoor service. Donations may be made to the Center for Hospice Care, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, 46545, or to any of the ministries at St. Hedwig Catholic Church, 331 S. Scott St., South Bend, 46601.
