SOUTH BEND - Steve Varga, 91, passed away at 7:20 a.m. on Saturday, May 22, 2010, in Ironwood Health and Rehabilitation. Steve was born on September 16, 1918, in South Bend, to the late Frank and Anna (Tatay) Varga. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Anna Hoffer, Emily Kinnue, Julie Petrasovits and Ethel Martin; and by his brother, Frank Varga. On May 11, 1946, he married Dorothy (Ruffner), who survives along with their children, Rick (Tina) Varga of Granger and Charmaine Varga of South Bend; three grandchildren, Jeff Varga, Lisa Varga and Shane (Amy) Varga; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Steve proudly served in the United States Army during WW II. He worked for Studebaker for 25 years and then worked for AM General from which he retired in 1986. He coached softball and loved watching his grandchildren's baseball games. He was a semi-professional football player for Drewery's before he entered into the Army. Steve enjoyed golfing with his buddies. The family would like to thank the staff at Ironwood Health and Rehabilitation for the special care they provided to their Dad and for the love they gave to their Mom. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. today, May 25, 2010, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 1827 E. Ireland Road, South Bend. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 26, 2010, in the funeral home. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's and Dementia Services of Northern Indiana.Published in South Bend Trib on May 25, 2010
