SOUTH BEND - Rita I. Gapinski, 82, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, April 26, 2015 at Hospice House in South Bend, IN. She was born on August 6, 1932 to the late Carl and Loretta (Dee) Whalen in LaSalle, IL, and has lived in South Bend, IN for 57 years. Along with her parents; she was also preceded in death by a grandson, Kyle Gapinski; and her husband, Art Gapinski. Rita retired in 2010 from the Elks Lodge #235 in South Bend, IN, where she worked for 57 years as an Administrative Manager. On July 5, 1952, as Rita I. Whalen, she married Arthur J. Gapinski in LaSalle, IL. He passed away on October 21, 2010. Rita is survived by a daughter, Carol Ingersoll of South Bend, IN; two sons, David (Jane) Gapinski of Marietta, GA; Thomas (Susan) Gapinski of South Bend, IN; nine grandchildren, Dana (Justin) West; Kara Gapinski; Drew (Shearice) Dixon; Matthew and Adam Ingersoll; Kelly and Kenny Gapinski; Kaitlyn (Chris Wilson); Chris (Alex) Gapinski; and eight grandchildren. Rita is a member of St. Anthony de Padua Parish; and long time member of the Elks Lodge #235 in South Bend, IN. She enjoyed spending time with her family and special friends. Rita is now at peace and reunited with her husband, Art. Visitation will be from 4 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, where a rosary will be recited at 5:00 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 30, 2015 at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, 2114 E. Jefferson Blvd., South Bend, IN, with Rev. David Ruppert officiating. Private burial will take place at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger, IN.
