SOUTH BEND - Jack Thomas Jr. died at 4:18 p.m. Thursday, April 7, 2016, at Healthwin Specialized Care, South Bend, IN. Survivors include three daughters, Sandra Sullivan of South Bend, IN, Linda Binder of Austin, TX, and Valerie (David) Scholl of Mason, OH; three sons, Kenneth Thomas of Columbus, GA, John (Carla) Thomas of Granger, IN, and Michael (Michele) Thomas of Viera, FL. He is also survived by several grandchildren, Shawn (Carolyn) Sullivan of Phoenix, AZ, Cassandra (Doc) Lomax of LaPorte, IN, Bre Lyn Binder of Austin, TX, Jonelle (Ashley) Neave of Austin, TX, Corey Binder of Austin, TX, Justin (Trella) Scholl of Carmel, IN, Aaron (Nichole) Scholl of Carmel, IN, Shannon Thomas of Granger, IN, Jared Thomas of Chicago, IL, Joshua Thomas of Bloomington, IN, Alison Luft of South Bend, IN, Austin Luft of Muncie, IN, and Jessica Luft of South Bend, IN; great-grandchildren, Joshua Werntz, Breanna (Scott) Kalvaitis, Landen Cerrillos, Harrison Neave, Matilda Neave, Lauren Binder, Payton Scholl, Reese Scholl, Hudson Scholl and Palmer Scholl; great-great-grandchildren, Brynna Werntz and Dehlia Kalvaitis; and his longtime companion, Lou Johnsen of Casa Grande, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley Jack Thomas, Sr. and Agnes (Carr) Thomas; sisters, Adele Cromer and Eleanor Flowers; and brothers, Charles Murphy, Gerald Murphy and Al Thomas. Jack retired from Indiana Bell Telephone Company after thirty-eight plus years as an installer repairman and a facility assigner. He was a veteran of World War II and received a Purple Heart on their first invasion in the Solomon Islands. He belonged to the 87th United States Naval Construction Battalion as a machinist mate third class. He worked on heavy equipment and constructed the B-29 airstrip for the bombing of Japan, but they surrendered and it was never used. Jack was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #303 and he also belonged to the Elkhart Moose #599 in Elkhart, IN. He loved music and spent many evenings somewhere they had Karaoke. He taped a few of the songs that he sang with his friends and they were pretty good.
A graveside service with military honors took place at 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 11, 2016, at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, IN. Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, South Bend, is assisting the family.
