Carthel E. Benninghoff, 81, of 530 E. Victoria St., died at 1:05 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. Born on Aug. 7, 1902, in Hamlet, he lived in South Bend most of his life. He retired from the former Studebaker Corp. in 1946 after 30 years of service. He then became a self-employed garage mechanic.

On July 25, 1925, in St. Joseph, Mich., he married the former Gertrude Johnson, who died in 1981. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Lilia) Grant and Mrs. Robert (Dixie) Fish, both of South Bend; two sons, Walter L. and Eugene R. Benninghoff, both of South Bend; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Clarice King of Lake Wales, Fla., Mrs. Bernice Starnal of Niles, Mrs. Margaret Bennitt of South Bend and Mrs. Hazel Stoner of Argos, and three brothers, Donald of Marion, Ind., Floyd of Elkhart and Harold Benninghoff of South Bend.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Milburn Blvd. Church of Christ, Mishawaka, with Elder Harold Akers officiating. Entombment will be in Riverview Mausoleum. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in Guisinger Colonial Chapel. He was a member of the church. Published in the South Bend Tribune; Thursday, March 22, 1984.
