In 1885, in Poland, Anton Szmankowski, 25, son of Franz & Franziska (Lewandowski) Szmankowski, married Rosalia Miecinski, 19, daughter of Lorenz & Apollonie (Wrobel) Miecinski. According to the 1900 census of South Bend, Indiana, Antoni, 39, and his wife Rozalia, 33, both born in Poland, had been married 14 years, had immigrated in 1888, and she had had 8 children of whom 7 were living, all 7 living at home (in birth order): Vicinty/Vincent, Leonora/Eleonora, Joanna/ Genevieve, Mary, Rozalia, Stefan, and Teresa, all born in Indiana. Antonius Szmankowski, son of Ignatius (sic?), died Oct. 30, 1902 and was buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery. (Records of St. Casimer's Catholic Church, South Bend, Indiana. His age, his place of birth, his date and place of death, and the name of the cemetery in which he was buried are given in his Indiana death certificate for which his wife, Rozie, was the informant. The undertaker was Bro. Francis Xavier of Notre Dame. By the time of the 1930 census, Rose Szmankowski, 65, a widow, was living with her daughter Eleanora Zakroski and her family. At the time of the 1940 census, Rosalie Szmankowski, 73, was living with her daughter Therese Dooms, and her family.Rozalia Szmankowski died in 1940. Her date and place of death are given in her Indiana death certificate for which the informant was Mrs. Peter Dooms, known from other records to be her daughter. She reported that her mother was the widow of Anthony Szmankowski. It was her understanding that her mother had been born Aug. 31, 1866 in Poland.
