ELKHART - Rubie E. Powell, 91, of Elkhart, died Wednesday afternoon, June 27, in Healthwin Specialized Care, South Bend. She was born May 19, 1916, in Dowagiac, Michigan, to Leopold and Rosalie (Hauk) Nering, who preceded her in death. On April 18, 1949, in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in South Bend, Rubie married James O. Powell, who survives along with a daughter, Pam (Dennis) Papczynski of Granger; a son, Dr. James R. (Anne) Powell of South Bend; five grandchildren, Lalita Nguyen, Ruth Powell, Zachary, Joshua and Kristi Papczynski; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Mark of Mishawaka. Rubie had a genuine love for the Lord and enjoyed sharing the Gospel throughout her life. She had a lifelong passion for writing and was the author of two books. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 2, in New Creation Fellowship, 30190 County Road 10 Granger (1/2 mile North of County Road 6 (Cleveland Road) on County Road 10). Interment will take place at 2:30 p.m. in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery (Mayflower and Edison Roads), South Bend. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. today, July 1, in the HICKEY Funeral Homes, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday in the church. Memorials may be made to New Creation Fellowship.
