Emiel J. Van Vooren was born April 9, 1923. He was the third oldest child of Theophil and Suzanna (Vervaet) Van Vooren who have preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his daughter Deborah, a sister Elizabeth 'Betty' Witz and a brother Albert. On June 30, 1945, Emiel and Emma L. Czegledy were wed in St. Mary's Church in South Bend and have been blessed with a loving and wonderful marriage of 65 years. In addition to Deborah, they have been blessed with four other children: Joyce Schultz (Fred, deceased), Denise Trimboli (Sam), Larry Van Vooren (Pat) and Christina Murra (Curtis). Also surviving Emiel are grandchildren Ray Schultz (Kandie), Debbie Gardner (Gary), Lisa Trimboli, Scott Van Vooren (Jen), Julie Cole, Christie Conway and Greg and Ryan Murra. Survivors also include great grandchildren Samantha, Michael, Josh, Dennis, Megan, Brendan, Nikki, Erik, Justin, Brandon and Arianna. Emiel is also survived by his brother and best friend Harry Van Vooren (Lorraine, deceased). Emiel was most proud to be an Intelligence Clerk of the 401st Bomb Group during World War II. The group and he were awarded a number of combat ribbons and battle stars including the Presidential Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Cluster. The B17G Bomb Group flew out of Deenthorp, England and earned the reputation as the 'best damned outfit' in the 8th Air Force. Emiel held various office positions in several companies. He was also employed as an insurance agent and realtor for the Smessaert Agency and retired from the St. Joseph County Clerk's office in Mishawaka. He was one of Notre Dame's biggest fans and when he was younger he loved to play softball, fish, garden and bowl. Most of all, loving and caring for his family held top priority. He considered God as his constant Companion and strived to live in His graces.
Except for his time in the service, he was a life long resident of Mishawaka, life member in the BK Club, member of Post 360 VFW and a member of the 401st Bomb Group Association. Emiel was also a life long member of St. Bavo Parish where he served as a server, choir member, lector, usher and Parish Council and Liturgy Committee member. Visitation for Emiel will be today, Sunday, from 2-6 at the Hahn Funeral Home 505 W. 8th St. Mishawaka where the Holy Rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Bavo Catholic Church, Mishawaka with the Rev. Barry England officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Bavo Catholic Church, the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association.
