Nov. 20, 1912 - Dec. 20, 2015
SOUTH BEND - Eugenia “Gina” A. Nowicki, 103, of South Bend, IN, passed away Sunday, December 20, 2015, in the Sanctuary at St. Paul's. Eugenia was born on November 20, 1912, in South Bend, to Valentine and Maryanna (Graf) Pajakowski. She retired in 1977 from the City of South Bend Police Department where she worked in the Records Department. She had previously been employed with Wilson Brothers. On September 5, 1942, in St. Adalbert Catholic Church, she married Clement Nowicki. He preceded her in death on November 8, 1942. Gina enjoyed dancing the polka, Polish food, arranging work projects for her nieces and nephews, taking the South Shore to Chicago, watching baseball and Notre Dame football, making kieflis, and playing “pinko” at St. Paul's. She loved holidays, inviting family over after church on Easter and Christmas. Many enjoyed the hospitality of her home on Kosciuszko Street. She prayed the Rosary every day and in May and October, walked to St. Adalbert's to say the Rosary each night, stopping at Henclewski Bakery on the way back to make Mrs. H open the door for fresh baked warm bread. Gina loved kids, and enjoyed getting photos of nieces, nephews and friends. Aunty Gina was very generous to her nieces, nephews, and their children. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Derda and Gertrude Botka, and five brothers, Eugene Paige, Clement, John, Edwin (Mooney) and Joseph Pajakowski, as well as her twin brother, who died in infancy; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Joe Derda, Chester Botka, Mary Pajakowski, Harriet Pajakowski, Dorothy Pajakowski; and nephews, William Pajakowski, Robert Pajakowski, and Donald Pajakowski; and nieces, Justine Skarbek and Rita Stankiewicz. Gina is survived by her sister-in-law, Irene Pajakowski, and seven nieces and nephews: Larry Pajakowski, Ann Marie Pence, Paul Derda, Marcia Mariani, Mary Beth Hall, Margy Pajakowski, Sr. Mary Ann Pajakowski, CSC. Aunty Gina and all her caregivers were blessed by the constant attention of her great-nephew John Pajakowski and his mother, Dolores Pajakowski, who assisted her with her many daily needs when she moved into St. Paul's. The family wants to thank the staff at Sanctuary at St. Paul's, who supported Gina with care, patience, and good humor as she reached 103. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, December 26, 2015, at St. Adalbert Catholic Church, with burial to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 9:00 am to 10:30 am, December 26, 2015, at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Adalbert Catholic Church or School.
