MISHAWAKA - Michael Urycki, age 55, of Mishawaka, IN, passed away on Monday, October 27, 2014, after a 10-month battle with gallbladder cancer. Mike was born on September 2, 1959, to Gerald and June (Bain) Urycki in Gary, Indiana. He grew up in Merrillville and graduated from Merrillville High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in June 1982. He graduated from IUPUI and was employed in retail management in several cities and companies in Indiana. Mike married Darci VanMeter in June 1983 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. They have two children, Mark and Sarah. Mike's biggest joy was cheering on his children in academics, music and sports. Mike was a faithful member of St. Bavo Parish. Mike is survived by his wife: Darci; children: Mark and Sarah at home; his mother: June; his sister: Lori (Jim) Waliczek and their children, Allison and Mitchel. Also by Darci's parents: Don and Fran VanMeter; her sister: Dorene (Bob) Budner, and their children: Matthew, Daniel (Heather) and David Budner; and great-niece: Lily. Mike was preceded in death by his father: Gerald Urycki; grandparents: Leo and Helen Urycki, and James and Rosalie Bain; and sister-in-law: Dawn VanMeter. Mike's family would like to thank all his friends, the oncology staff at Memorial Hospital, Paragon Home Health, and the Center for Hospice who provided support to all of us during this difficult time. Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, November 1, 2014, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 200 E. 78th Ave., Merrillville, IN 46410, from 9:00 AM (Central Standard Time) until time of Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM with Fr. Gerald Sroka officiating. Interment will take place at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville, IN. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Bavo Parish in Mishawaka, IN, at a later date. Memorial contributions requested in Mike's memory to Center for Hospice-Veterans Program, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
