SOUTH BEND - Walter A. Stefaniak, 83, passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2017 in Memorial Hospital. Walter was born in South Bend to the late Walter Sr. and Blanche (Trudzinski). Walter was also preceded in death by a brother, Ben Stefaniak; and sisters, Alice Machowiak and Blanche Stefaniak. On February 11, 1956 at St. Casimir's Parish in South Bend, Walter married Marie M. (Leszczynski) Stefaniak who survives along with their sons, Tom W. Stefaniak of North Liberty, IN and Rick A. (Claire) Stefaniak of Lafayette, IN; sister, Evelyn Hock; and grandsons, Bradley Stefaniak of Phoenix, AZ, Patrick Stefaniak of New York City, NY, and Scott Stefaniak of Lafayette, IN. Walt graduated from Greene Township High School. He was a Parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church. Walt was a life time member of Crumstown Conservation Club and also belonged to the Carpenter's Local 413, and the St. Joe Club. He was a lifelong carpenter, and superintendent in the Construction Industry, working primarily for Hickey, Ziolkowski and Casteel Construction Companies up until his retirement. Walt loved fishing, hunting, playing cards especially Euchre as well as going to casinos. He enjoyed doing construction jobs in his pole barn. Walt was an avid Notre Dame fan. He loved listening and dancing to Polka music. Family time was very important to him, especially celebrating the 4th of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Walt's family would like to thank everyone at Memorial and St. Joseph Hospital's for their care, as well as the nursing and administrative staff at St. Paul's Retirement Home. Visitation for Walter will take place Tuesday, January 2nd, 2018 from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd. with a Rosary to be prayed at 5:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am, Wednesday January 3rd, 2018 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 56405 S. Mayflower Road, South Bend, IN. Entombment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to Indiana Parkinson's Foundation, 14350 Mundy Drive, Suite 800, #181, Noblesville, IN 46060.
