Alex "Marty" Szymanski, 78, of South Bend, Ind., died at 9:40 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, in Memorial Hospital. He was born in South Bend to Alexander and Mary (Rozycki), who have preceded him in death. On Aug. 21, 1948, he married Mary Lou Laskowski, who survives. Alex was also preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Szymanski in 1965; and by a sister, Ruth Rupert. Alex is survived by his wife, Mary Lou (Laskowski); two daughters, Cathy Sager of Jackson, Fla., and Jane (Tom) Hoff of South Bend; four sons, Mark (Terry) Szymanski of Bremen, Ind., Richard (Mary) Szymanski of Mishawaka, Ind., Michael (Tina) Szymanski and James (Giana) Szymanski of South Bend; a sister, Alice Martinczak of South Bend; and by nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II until 1946. Alex was an active member of American Legion Post 357, St. Joseph Young Men's Society, St. Adalbert Usher Club and St. Adalbert Church. He was a retired painting contractor who worked locally for many years. Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 18, in the ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, with a Rosary at 4:30 p.m. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, in St. Adalbert Catholic Church. Burial to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend.
