SOUTH BEND - Eugene “Gene” S. Jurek, 87, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 7:52 a.m. Wednesday, January 31, 2018 in his home. He was born on April 30, 1930 to the late Stanley, Jr. and Theodora (Zavodny) Jurek in South Bend, IN, and was a lifelong resident. Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sisters, Gertrude “Trudy” Hoffman and Cecelia Kish; one brother, John Jurek; and five brothers-in-law, Eugene Palkowski, Marion Jagmin, Ed Antonowicz, Mike Kish, and Chuck Hoffman.Gene retired in 1995 from AM General, where he worked in Material Handling for 28 years. On May 17, 1958, he married Marcia Ann Switalski. She died on February 13, 1992. Gene later married Rosalie (Szabo) Treber on November 20, 2004. Gene is survived by his loving wife of 13 years, Rosalie Jurek of South Bend, IN; his three sons, Kevin Jurek of South Bend, IN, Kenneth Jurek of Sarasota, FL, and Karl (Sally) Jurek of South Bend, IN; Rosalie's daughter, Sharon (James) Stremme of South Bend, IN; Rosalie's son, David (Kelly) Treber of South Bend, IN; one granddaughter, Victoria Jurek of South Bend, IN; three sisters, Evelyn Antonowicz of Palo Alto, CA, Patricia “Pat” Palkowski of South Bend, IN, and Barbara Jagmin of Virginia; one brother, Stanley (Virginia) Jurek of South Bend, IN; and a sister-in-law, Joan Jurek of South Bend, IN. Gene was a member of Holy Family Parish; Z. B. Falcons Club; St. Joseph Young Men's Society; several Euchre Clubs; American Legion Post #357; VFW #3184, where he was a former Commander and 3rd District Commander from 1969-1970 - which is now VFW Post #9820. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran of the Korean War, and was both loyal and true to his country and family. Gene was a former Notre Dame Football Usher for 38 years, and was an avid Notre Dame fan. Visitation will be from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, February 4, 2018 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 5, 2018 at Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, where Military Honors will take place.
