SOUTH BEND - Gene Sobiech, 75, passed away at 11:45 pm on Saturday, February 25, 2012, in the Ironwood Health and Rehabilitation Facility. Gene was born February 29, 1936, to the late Frank and Helen (Wie) Sobiech in South Bend. On June 4, 1960, Gene married Jacqueline "Jackie" Star, who preceded him in death on July 7, 1994. He was also preceded in death by sisters, Gertrude Bednarek, Marge Kibler, and by a brother, Richard Sobiech. Gene is survived by a son, Keith (Shannon Checkley) Sobiech of South Bend; nephews, Wayne Sobiech, Mark and Gary Bednarek; and niece, Karen Kibler; as well as many grand-nephews and nieces. Gene honorably served his country in the United States Army Reserves. He graduated in 1953 from South Bend Catholic. Gene worked for Bendix, Wheelabrater Frye, Allied Products, and went on to retire from Adams Engineering. He was a parishioner at the Cathedral of St. Matthew. He was a member of the Polish National Alliance (PNA) Club and was an avid golfer. He enjoyed hanging out at Peddler's Pub, having a beer with his friends, loved softball, bowling, was a total sports fan, and in his younger years he coached his son Keith's baseball team. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, in the ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 1827 Ireland Road. A graveside service will be held at 10 am Wednesday, March 7, 2012, at St. Joseph Cemetery. Condolences for the family may be made at www.sjfh.net.
