Julius Hornyak

VANDALIA - Julius Hornyak passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 23, 2012. He was born on September 29, 1923 to Stephen and Bertha (Brahlick) Hornyak. Julius retired from the St Joseph County Police Department on April 12, 1985. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 155 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1167. Julius served in the United States Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946. During this time, he participated in some of the deadliest battles and invasions in France and Germany and was lucky to survive and return home to his family, which loved him very much and was grateful to have him back. Julius won the 1938 Soap Box Derby Race in South Bend when he was 15 years old and he went on to represent this city in the National Race in Ohio. On June 22, 1946, Julius married Anna Kovacs in St. Stephen's Church in South Bend. She died on July 23, 1995. Julius was also preceded in death by three brothers, Steve Hornyak, Anton Hornyak, and Frank Hornyak, and four sisters, Alma Katona, Esther Katona, Margaret Compton, and Ann Hornyak. Surviving are two brothers, John Paksi and Louis Paksi both of South Bend, and three sisters, Frances Hojnacki and Freda Laiber, both of South Bend, and Julie Paksi-Zapalski of Shavehead Lake, Vandalia, MI. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Julius died peacefully doing what he loved to do, sitting in a chair beside his beloved Shavehead Lake watching the boats, water skiers, and fishermen. He loved to go fishing and for many years he enjoyed taking fishing trips with his brothers to Canada and now he has taken his final trip to be with his deceased brothers and sisters. His surviving family will miss him very much. Julius was cremated according to his wishes. Burial of his ashes will take place at 11:00 am, Saturday, June 30, 2012 in Highland Cemetery.
