Bishop Noll grads reunite

Bishop Noll Institute has a wonderful tradition called the 50+ Club Eucharist and Sunday Brunch Celebration. This year 60 folks gathered at Saint Margaret Mary Church and Dynasty Banquet Center in Hammond. The annual event sponsored by Bishop Noll Institute Foundation with director James Sungaila gathers togehter all alumni who graduated from the Catholic school (grades 7-12) once a year to celebrate their blessings and their friendship. Shirley Scanlon of Highland, administrative assistant in the Foundation office, served as hostess and assisted in the planning of the gathering.

The morning began with an 8:30 am. Eucharist celebration at Saint Margaret Mary Parish Church on the campus of the school. The Rev. Alfred Dettmer led the celebration and welcomed the club members after which they took a tour of the school facilities with Carole Hepner '59 of Hammond and Principal Scott Fech '85 of Valparaiso. Then it was on to the banquet center.

Jim Sungaila of Orland Park welcomed members and made introductions. Singled out as the oldest graduating member present was Esther Ramsay of Valparaiso, class of 1931. Ramsay is a retired Navy captain with a rich background of military nursing service and was one of the first teachers in Purdue University Calumet's nursing program when it began. She was accompanied by her niece Sandy McLeod '73 of Valparaiso.

Fech led the invocation. The luncheon buffet consisted of a salad of crisp garden greens, crusty bread, garlic roasted new potatoes, fried chicken with butter sauce, roast sirloin of beef with gravy, cheese cake with strawberries and coffee and tea. Following the wonderful meal, Fech told a story about how he once was told that years ago tuition was $6 a month and a parent came to the principal to say the family couldn't afford that. The principal asked if they could manage $3. They said they would try. He used the example to point out that nothing has changed -- parents still have difficulty paying tuition and their sacrifices don't go unnoticed.

Those attending the event included Patrice McShane-Austgen '35 of Hammond; Albert '44 and Mary Baranowski of Highland; Victoria Dlugopolski-Bennett '49, Fordsville, Ky.; Joan Meyer-Brew '50, Schererville; Katherine Grimmer-Chiles '44 and Lloyd Chiles, Hammond; James Cloghessy '44, Whiting; Alberta Bowman Cloghessy '44, Whiting; Charles and Irma Coddington (both '49), DeMotte.
