Richard U. "Dick" Walz , 90, of East Woodside in South Bend, passed away Wednesday, February 23, 2005, in his residence. Dick was born on June 15, 1914, to John E. and Ida M. (Ullery) Walz , who preceded him in death. On November 11, 1948, Dick married L. Evalyn Dennison, who preceded him in death on February 4, 2002. Also preceding in death were six brothers and one sister. Surviving Dick are four daughters, Cindy (Harry) Wilkinson of Dixon, Ill., Mary Lisa Swoape of Bloomington, IN, Victoria Walz of South Bend and Trish (Gary) Becker of South Bend; two sons, Denny (Cyndi) Walz and Joseph (Anita) Walz , both of South Bend; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Dick was a veteran of World War II, stationed in Northern France in the 883rd Heavy Automotive Maintenance Division of the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Cathedral of St. Matthew, a past president of the Optimist Club, and the president and owner of J.E. Walz Furniture. Visitation will be today, February 24, 2005, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the St. Joseph Funeral Home, 1827 E. Ireland Road, South Bend, IN 46614, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, February 25, 2005, at 10 a.m. in The Cathedral of St. Matthew. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend, IN. Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
