SOUTH BEND - Bruce A. Berry, 78, of South Bend, passed away at 8:50 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, 2009, in the Healthwin Specialized Care Center, South Bend. Bruce was born on June 17, 1930, in South Bend, to the late Warren and Ernestine (Bailey) Berry. On May 28, 1983, in South Bend, he married Louise Berta, who passed away on January 7, 2004. Bruce is survived by five children, Mary Ann (Tim) Celmer of South Bend, Betty (Jim Gardner) Groppe of South Bend, Joan (Dennis) Solloway of Cassopolis, MI, John (Vickie) Szabo of Portage, IN, and Karen (Jim) McKinnies of South Bend, IN. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and two brothers, Donald Berry of Florida and Ronald Heide of Niles, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather, Eric Heide, and by a son, Charles "Sonny" Szabo. Bruce proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and was awarded the Purple Heart. He worked for Project Fence of South Bend for many years before retirement and belonged to V.F.W. Post 624, the Clay Democratic Club and ZB Falcons Nest 80. He will be remembered for his love of fishing, playing cards, shooting pool, country music and Western movies. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, May 1, in Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Highway, Osceola. Visitation will be held from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Friday in the funeral home, with burial to follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.
