Peter Ewald, 83, of 318 S. Chestnut, died Tuesday in St. Joseph’s Hospital after a lengthy illness. Ewald was a retired Bendix Corp. employe. Born on June 19, 1893, in South Bend, he lived here his lifetime. In January 1921, he married Lillian Kowalewski. She died in 1969. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Henrietta Garner of Shawnee Mission, Kan.; three sons, Sylvester, Joseph and Donald, all of South Bend; four grandchildren; three brothers, Casimer, Walter and Sylvester, all of South Bend. Services will be at 9 a.m. Friday in St. Hedwig Catholic Church. Rev. Matthew J. Sienkiewicz, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and noon to 9 p.m. Thursday in the St. Joseph Funeral Home where a parish rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday. He was a member of Post 357, American Legion; Chapter 6, Disabled American Veterans; Bendix Local 9, United Auto Workers, and a veteran of World War I.
