South Bend - Laddie J. Kovach, Jr., “Duke”, 88, passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, January 27, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. Laddie was born March 1, 1933 in South Bend, to the late Laddie and Rose (Philips) Kovach, Sr. Laddie married the love of his life, Virginia (Nowak) Kovach on October 20, 1956 in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. They celebrated 65 years of marriage this past year. She survives to cherish the memory Laddie along with their children, John (Lisa) Kovach of Canton, NY, Joyce (Paul) Hahn of North Liberty, IN, and James Kovach of Mishawaka, IN; grandchildren, Jenn (Derick) Roberts, Mindy Hahn, Emily (Dustin) Williams, Marina Kovach, Irina Kovach, Selina Kovach (fiance-Eric Westlake), and Andrew Kovach; great-grandchildren, Miley, Emma, & Haven Roberts and Nathaniel, Gabriel, & Elliana Westlake. Laddie honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the VFW #360, American Legion 161, and Elkhart DAV Post 19. Laddie worked for Wheelabrator-Frye until they closed, then went to work for St. Joseph County Maintenance Department until retiring in 1998. He was a parishioner of Christ the King Catholic Church. He was a collector of all military history which he displayed in a special “War Room”. Laddie was a lifetime Chicago Bears fan; you could cheer on no others in his presence. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His family brought him much joy, especially the little ones and grandpuppies.
A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, February 8, 2022, with visitation from 10:00-11:30am with a service beginning at 11:30am. at ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, Mayflower Rd. A private burial will be held at Highland Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to Millers Vets, 747 Michigan St., South Bend, IN 46601 or Center for Hospice Care, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
