MISHAWAKA - Patrick Dominic Zappia, Sr., 82, of Mishawaka, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, November 6, 2013, in his home. Pat was born September 7, 1931, in Mishawaka, a son of the late Frank and Rose (Fotia) Zappia. He grew up and spent most of his life in Mishawaka. He graduated from South Bend Central Catholic High School. Pat was a talented meat cutter, working many years for Kroger's, and at one time owned and operated his own meat shop at the corner of Mishawaka Avenue and Main Street. For several years he owned and operated the Linebacker Lounge in South Bend. Pat was a member of St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church in South Bend. He founded and served as president of the Piasan Club and was a member of the Diloreto Society. Pat was an avid Notre Dame and Chicago Cubs fan. He was a handyman and enjoyed gardening and yard work. Pat married Kathleen "Kay" Ann Curtis in 1979, and she survives. Other surviving family members include a son, Patrick D. Zappia, Jr. (Aaron Carnahan); three daughters, Pam Armstead (Jeff), Ann Taylor (Tim) and Vicki Harvey; five brothers, Dominic Zappia, Tony Zappia, Joseph Zappia, Rocco Zappia (Sara) and Frank Zappia (Thelma); two sisters, Mary Catanzarite (Joseph) and Pam Deal (Sherm); ten grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Hailey, Evelyn, Cedric, Mallory, Morgan, Josh, Caleb, Sam and Elizabeth; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved dogs, Precious and Peppy. Pat was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Saldana, and an infant brother, Antonio Zappia. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10:30 am in St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church on East Jefferson Blvd. in South Bend, with Rev. David Ruppert officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka. Friends may spend time with Pat's family on Sunday from 2 - 6 pm in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka, where the Rosary will be prayed at 5 pm. Visitation is also Monday in the church from 9:30 - 10:30 am. Memorials are suggested to Pet Refuge, St. Anthony Parish or Southerncare Hospice.
