Jadwiga Parakowski

SOUTH BEND - Jadwiga "Harriet" Parakowski, 91, formerly of Huron Street, passed away on Friday, August 12, 2011, at 8:05 a.m. in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. She died peacefully surrounded by her children and grandchildren. On October 6, 1919, in Poland, Jadwiga was born to the late Bolestav and Maria (Fornal) Wolinski. As a young woman she was taken from her home by the Nazis and forced to work in Germany during the war. On September 17, 1945, she and Bronislaw Parakowski were married in Belgium. In 1950, with her husband and her first two children, she came to her new country and life. She loved her birth country and was proud of her Polish heritage, and most of all her Catholic faith. Jadwiga was a member of St. Adalbert Catholic Church. She was a wonderful cook with many old Polish traditional recipes. She also loved to work in her garden. Jadwiga's family will always remember the holidays and all the wonderful food, along with Polish traditions. Preceding Jadwiga in death were her parents, husband, and son, John Parakowski, who died on May 5, 2011. Surviving are daughters, Ursula (George) Zeltner of Granger, Barbara (Kit) Johnson of Mishawaka, Christine (Randy) Borror of South Bend; sons, Henry (Leslie) Parakowski of Granger, Leon Parakowski of South Bend; daughter-in-law, Becky Parakowski of South Bend; grandchildren, Thad (Amanda) Johnson, Sarah, Amy, Laura, Mark Johnson, George W. Zeltner, Amanda (Nathan) Hartshorne, Tracy (Andy) Williams, Stacey (David) Floran, John Henry Parakowski, Rusty (Sarah) Borror, Jennifer (Ryan) Johnson; and 12 great-grandchildren. In Poland she is survived by one cousin and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be on Tuesday, August 16, 2011, from 9:00 am to 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Road, South Bend. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 16, 2011, in St. Adalbert Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend. The family would like to thank the staff on the seventh floor/room 737 of Memorial Hospital for their care and compassion.
