Mary Tetzlaff passed away after a long illness at 5pm on April 30, 2013 at the Milton Home of South Bend, Indiana, in the company of her family. Mary was born on August 23, 1930 in Soltvadkert, Hungary to Adam and Maria (Felder) Eifert. She had a brother, Adam and a sister, Eva. Because the Eiferts were ethnic Germans, they became refugees, moving to southern Germany during the turmoil of World War II. There she trained as a seamstress after the war and always maintained a simple, classic sense of style. In 1952 her family immigrated to the United States under the sponsorship of a German Baptist church in Chicago. Mary worked first as a nanny and then as a "forelady" in a factory. In 1956 she married Manfred Tetzlaff and in 1964 their daughter Monica was born. In 1968, Mary moved to Vero Beach, Florida with her family. Manfred and Mary ran the Surf 'n Sand motel from 1968 to 1982. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Vero Beach. Manfred died in January 2012 and in August of 2012 Mary moved to South Bend, Indiana to be near Monica and her family. She is survived by Monica Tetzlaff (Brad Laird), her grandchildren Hannah, Quinn, Rhiannon and Cameron Laird, and five nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., South Bend on May 8, 2013 at 2pm, with visitation prior from noon-2pm. Burial will be in Southlawn Cemetery following services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Friends Service Committee, 1501 Cherry St., Philadelphia, PA, 19102. E-Mail condolences may be made at www.welsheimer.com
