MISHAWAKA - Aloy B. Scheibelhut, 93, of Mishawaka, passed away early Tuesday morning, October 5, 2010, in Hospice House, South Bend. Aloy was born March 24, 1917, in Mishawaka, a son of the late Bernard and Candus (Mohn) Scheibelhut. He grew up in Mishawaka and graduated from Mishawaka High School. On January 24, 1942, Aloy married Katherine "Katie" A. O'Neil, and they made Mishawaka their home. Aloy served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II from March 1942 until June 1945. He received the EAME Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars and 1 Bronze Arrowhead, the Good Conduct Ribbon, as well as the Distinguished Unit Citation. For many years, Aloy owned and operated Shivey Service at the corner of Main Street and McKinley. He later worked for the Elkhart Parks Department. Aloy was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church in Mishawaka. For many years he assisted his friend, Father Yast, with 7 a.m. Mass at St. Joseph Church in Mishawaka. Aloy was a lifetime member of VFW Post #360. He enjoyed fishing, camping and woodworking. His faith and family were the most important parts of his life. Aloy's surviving family includes his nine children, Patricia (Del) Bragg of St. Petersburg, Florida, John Scheibelhut of South Bend, Margaret (Tom) O'Connor of Bristol, Catherine Hull of Bothell, Washington, Joan Scheibelhut of Mishawaka, Jane Scheibelhut of Mishawaka, Mary Yadak of San Antonio, Texas, Jean (Dan) Cook of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Theresa (Steve) Hodgson of Mishawaka; a brother, Richard (Gail) Scheibelhut of Victoria, Texas; two sisters, Julia Rose Milliken of Mishawaka and Elizabeth "Betty" Gilmartin of South Bend; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Aloy was preceded in death by his wife, Katie; and by a brother, Robert Scheibelhut. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Monica Catholic Church, 222 W. Mishawaka Ave., Mishawaka, with Rev. Jeffery Largent officiating. Cremation will follow with burial at a later date at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may spend time with Aloy's family Thursday from 5 - 7 p.m. in Thallemer, Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka, where the Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be Friday from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. in the church. Contributions in Aloy's memory may be made to The Center for Hospice Care or to St. Monica Church. Assistance with memorials is available at the funeral home.
