Bruce Chlebek

MICHIGAN CITY - Bruce Chlebek, 84, of Michigan City, passed away on his 84th birthday on July 6, 2014, at Inpatient Hospice at Franciscan Saint Anthony Hospital. A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, with Rev. Dennis Blaney officiating. Viewing will be held today from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Root Funeral Home. Bruce was born July 6, 1930, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to the late Anthony and Vivian (Harvey) Chlebek. On June 29, 1957, in Mishawaka, Indiana, he married Joan (Janiak) Chlebek, his wife of 57 years, and she is surviving in Michigan City. Also surviving are three children, David (Sue) Chlebek of La Porte, Christopher (Elena) Chlebek of Temecula, California, and Cathy (Don) Bildhauser of Michigan City; and seven grandchildren, Sarah Chlebek, Sam Chlebek, Sophie Chlebek, Alex Chlebek, Meghan Chlebek, Abby Bildhauser and Katie Bildhauser. Bruce retired from the Computer Data Processing Area for the Michigan City Area School System. Bruce was a graduate of Central Catholic High School in South Bend. He then attended Western Michigan College before joining the Navy. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, a docent at Great Lakes Museum of Military History, Michiana Evening Lions Club, and volunteered many hours at Sharing Meadows, Share Foundation, and the Men's Homeless Shelter at Sacred Heart Church. He was an avid Notre Dame football fan, loved to read books on the history of wars, build models, and traveling all over the world. He also enjoyed walking at the pond and watching all the birds, especially the swans. Memorials may be made to Share Foundation for the Handicapped. Published in South Bend Tribune on July 10, 2014
