Sylvia Anne Cass, 78, passed away on Thursday, May 5, 2022. Sylvia was the first baby born in South Bend, IN on January 1, 1944. She was born to the late Vincent and Veronica (Majcher) Sparazynski. On October 13, 1962, in St. Adalbert’s Church in South Bend, she married the late Gregg F. Cass. She is also preceded in death by her daughter, Dawn Meng and brother, Eugene Sparazynski. Surviving are her children, Diana (David) Marsh and Scott (Jodi) Cass; grandchildren, John, Vincent and Allison; and siblings, Mary Ann Collins (Bruce Konkey), Leona Paetschow and Bernard (Julie) Sparazynski. Sylvia is a 1961 graduate of Washington High School. She met her husband on a blind date and their union lasted 56 years. In 1965, her and Gregg moved to California. They traveled extensively and would always make a return trip to South Bend for her class reunions. Sylvia retired from Golden State Foods in Industry, CA. After retiring, they moved to Copperopolis, CA where they enjoyed living in a golfing community and made many new friends. She loved to smile and laugh. Her favorite time of year was Christmas. They would put up several trees, decorated with different themes. One was always a McDonald tree and a tree with all the ornaments she made. With the help of her husband, they would also display a huge Christmas village which she shared with family and friends. A Memorial Mass will be held at 12 pm on Friday, June 24th in St. Pius X Catholic Church in Granger, IN with Monsignor William Schooler officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour prior in the church. Sylvia will be laid to rest in Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Orange, CA. Memorial contributions can be made to Alzheimer’s Association 50 E. 91st St., Ste 100, Indianapolis, IN 46209-4830.
