Bernard G. Roberts Sr.
Aug. 9, 1931 - Feb. 18, 2021
MISHAWAKA, IN - Bernard G. “Bernie” Roberts Sr. passed away on February 18, 2021. Bernie was born on August 9, 1931 to the late Conrad C. and Thelma A. (Joyal) Roberts. He grew up in Mishawaka and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School. Right after high school he worked at the Studebaker plant in South Bend until he felt the need to join the U.S. Navy when the Korean War Conflict started. He joined in 1951 and served on the U.S.S. Greenwich Bay and the U.S.S. Coral Sea, taking two tours through the Persian Gulf. He loved talking about his time overseas. He was a lifelong member of the VFW. On October 20, 1956, he married Joyce Williams in St. Monica Catholic Church in Mishawaka. They made Mishawaka their home and after retiring became “Winter Texans” wintering in Donna, Texas for several years. Bernie was a member of St. Monica Church nearly his entire life, except for a few years when he lived in Grovertown, Indiana. He was an usher for several years and enjoyed many activities, especially the euchre tournaments. Bernie was also a member of Knights of Columbus. In 1956 Bernie became a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #153, working on several buildings in the area, including the County City Building, D.C. Cook Nuclear Plant, and several buildings on the campus of Notre Dame. In his earlier years he enjoyed woodworking, making several different novelty items for friends and family. He enjoyed camping and fishing, taking yearly trips to Canada with his brothers and friends. Bernie is survived by his children, Bernie Jr. (Victoria), Mike (Karen), Susan, Ann (Terry) McCallum, Don (Marcia), Alicia Eichberger, Janet (Dan Mihal) Roberts, and Kim Green. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Michelle, Kelly, Steve, Jessica, Elizabeth, Jill, Robyn, Rose, Holly, Daniel, Sarah, Kyle, Kristopher, Katelyn, Karley, Collin, Ryan, and Jacob, and 22 great-grandchildren; siblings, Mary (Leroy) Davis, Joe (Fran), Tom (Judy), and Paul along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He will be very missed by his faithful companions, Belle, Rusty, Rocket, and Moose. Along with his parents, Bernie was preceded in death by his wife Joyce, sons Leo and Joseph, daughter Mary and his siblings, Conrad, John, Donald, and Dorothy. Bernie was an avid Notre Dame fan and was a stadium usher for several years. If he wasn't in the stadium watching the game he was definitely watching them at home. The family wishes to thank Heartland Hospice, especially Denise, Maudisha, Deb, Heather, Scott, and Pat. You are all a blessing to our dad and family. A huge shout out goes to everybody at the American Pancake House in Mishawaka. We knew how much you loved our dad by how well you fed him. Thank You! Visitation for Bernie is TODAY, Sunday, February 21, from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. with a Rosary recited at 5:00 p.m. at the Palmer Funeral Home-Bubb Chapel, 3910 N. Main Street, Mishawaka. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 22, with visitation from 9:00 a.m. until service time at St. Monica Catholic Church, 222 West Mishawaka Avenue, Mishawaka. Father Jacob Meyer will officiate the services with burial to follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger where V.F.W. Post #360 will conduct Military Honors.
