SOUTH BEND - Bernard J. "Ben" "Clarkie" Gadacz, 82, passed away at 6:50 pm on Friday, October 21, 2011, in his residence. Bernard was born August 17, 1929, in South Bend, to the late Joseph and Martha (Ziolkowski) Gadacz. Bernard was also preceded in death by sisters, Agnes Lodyga and Betty Andrysiak; and brothers, John and Louis. On July 16, 1960, Ben married Elizabeth A. "Betty" (Rupchock) at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Granger. She survives along with children, Aggie (Jeff) Atkins of Chicago, IL, Barbara (Bob) Allison of Walkerton, Carmen (Arnie) Wegener of Goshen, Susan (Liz Deger) Gadacz of Verona, WI, Kenneth Gadacz of South Bend and Stephen Gadacz of South Bend; grandchildren, Zachary, Samantha and Shelby Gadacz of South Bend, Joe and Christen Wegener of Goshen, Connor and Camille Allison of Walkerton, and Sam Atkins of Chicago, IL; sister, Theresa (Art) Perry of South Bend; mother-in-law, Martha Rupchock of Granger; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Ben was a lifelong parishioner of St. Adalbert Catholic Church. He honorably served his country in the United States Army and was a member of American Legion Post 357 and VFW #3194. He was an employee of New York Central and Penn Central and was Chief Clerk for Conrail for 43 years before retiring in 1989. He was also a member of the PNA #83 and the St. Joe Club. Ben was a lifelong Detroit Tigers fan, enjoyed raising roses, going to the casino, and was an avid euchre player. He bowled a 300 game on October 13, 1958, and was a Classic League bowler. Visitation will be from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, October 25, 2011, in the ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where the Rosary will be prayed at 4:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 am on Wednesday, October 26, 2011, in St. Adalbert Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society, 3408 Ardmore Trail, South Bend, IN 46628; or to the charity of the donor's choice .
