Aug. 29, 1919 - June 26, 2013 SOUTH BEND - Robert "Bob" Emerson Hess, 93, passed away in the early morning on Wednesday, June 26, at St. Joseph Hospital in Mishawaka. A native of Alliance, Ohio, Robert served in the Navy during World War II. He earned his bachelor's degree in ceramics engineering at the Ohio State University and his master's degree in business at Michigan State University. He and his family moved to South Bend in 1960; he was an engineer at Bendix from then until his retirement in 1982. He was preceded by his parents, Aubrey and Ona (Wander) Hess, and his brothers, John and James Hess. Surviving are Ethel (Kocsis) Hess, his wife of 68 years; sons, Randall (Vickie) Hess, Thomas (Betty Jane) Hess and David Hess; daughter, Ilona (Thomas) Coffey; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Bob was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, serving as a deacon and as an elder. After his retirement, he became co-founder of the Northern Indiana Food Bank and directed its operations for its first several years. The family wishes to thank Dr. Debra McClain for her many acts of kindness, especially these last months. In order to make it possible for distant family members to gather, the memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Saturday, August 17, 2013. The time of service will be announced at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Northern Indiana Food Bank, Westminster Presbyterian Church, or to St. Margaret's House.
