[N34800] BROTHER WALTER BERNARD GLUHM, C.S.C.

Brother Walter Bernard Gluhm, C.S.C., 89, died at Dujarié House, Holy Cross Village, Notre Dame, IN. He was born the youngest of four children in Hamilton, Ohio to John and Clara (Becker) Gluhm. He attended St. Peter in Chains Elementary School and graduated from Hamilton Catholic High School in 1952. For the next three years, he worked as a shipping clerk at a lumber company, and in 1955 was drafted into the United States Army, serving most of his tour in Leonard Woods, MO. Honorably discharged in April of 1957, he entered the Congregation of Holy Cross in June of that year. In 1982, he earned a BA in General Studies from Indiana University, South Bend, IN, and in 1988 an MA in Education from Spalding University in Louisville, KY. Brother Walter’s many ministries have included working as a postal clerk at the University of Notre Dame, serving at boys’ homes in Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan, pastoral ministry in Georgia and Louisiana, and teaching in Indiana, Kentucky, Arizona and Texas. He was director of Columba Hall, Notre Dame, IN from 2006-2012, then moving to Austin, TX until 2020. He returned to Notre Dame as a resident at Columba Hall, spending the last few months of his life at Dujarié House. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Ralph, and two sisters Irma (Hasken) and Edith (Drury) and by his nephew Donald Hasken. He is survived by nieces Barbara (Hasken) Spinelli, Janet (Drury) Diekmann, Diane Gluhm, Vivian Gluhm, and Sharon (Hasken) Merryman, and three nephews Tim Drury, Tom Drury, and James Hasken, as well as several grandnieces and grandnephews. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 5, 2023 at St. Joseph Chapel, Holy Cross College from 10:00 to 11:00 am on the grounds of Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame. The Mass of Resurrection will follow with interment afterward in St. Joseph’s Cemetery of the Village. Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
