SOUTH BEND - Esther E. Szczechowski, 87, passed away peacefully after a long illness at 9:23 pm, Tuesday, July 16, 2013 in the Morning View Nursing and Rehabilitation. Esther was born December 1, 1925 in South Bend to the late Victor and Helen (Walkowiak) Zalas. On June 8, 1946 in South Bend Esther married her loving spouse Clarence Szczechowski who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her step-father, Ed Zakrocki. Survivors include sons, Larry (Peg) Szczechowski of South Bend, Ken (Debbie) Szczechowski of North Liberty, and Jim (Michelle) Szczechowski of South Bend; daughter, Sue (Rick) Turpin of Bremen; grandchildren, C.J., Robert, Kim, Kelly, Eric, Jessie, Terry, Heather, Andrew, Danielle; great grandchildren, Scott, Brielle, Zach, Nick, Nate, Alex, and Josh; and sister, Dorothy Nyari of South Bend. Esther was employed with the Uniroyal Corporation and Ball Band. She was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Bishop & Martyr, and a member of the D.A.V. Aux. 39. Esther enjoyed travelling, playing golf, card games, puzzles, shopping and was an avid Notre Dame Sports fan. Visitation for Esther will be 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Friday, July 19, 2013 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd. where a Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 pm . A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Saturday, July 20, 2013 in St Stanislaus Bishop & Martyr Catholic Church. Entombment will follow at St Joseph Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr, 920 Wilber St., South Bend, IN 46628 or Harbor Light Hospice, 4330 Miami St., South Bend, IN 46614.
