EDWARDSBURG - John Kurnyak, 89 years old of Edwardsburg, passed to his rest Aug. 7, 2016, at Whispering Pines in Edwardsburg after an illness. He was born Dec. 21, 1926, in Mishawaka, IN, the son of Simon James and Louise (Kuzmich) Kurnyak, and had lived in this area all of his life. John worked for the former Bendix Corp. in South Bend for 42 years, retiring in 1988. He served in the United States Army during WW II. He was a past Commander of the Edwardsburg American Legion Post 365, and was a member of the Edwardsburg Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2284. He was a dedicated member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, Edwardsburg, and was a member of the church's ‘Polka Singers.” John was married July 31, 1954, in Bristol, IN, to Elsie B. Riedl, and she passed on April 22, 1995. Surviving are their two daughters, Barbara Ann Chlebowski of Granger and Julie E. Owens of Huntsville, AL. There are five grandchildren, John (Maira) Ward, Daniel (Jennifer) Owens, Elissa (Chris) Miller, Arthur (Kristen) Chlebowski and Shelly Chlebowski. There are four great-grandchildren, Mason Ward, Ian Ward, Isaac Ward and Lucas Ward. Family who have passed are his parents, his beloved wife, Elsie, and his sister, Elizabeth. The family would like to give a special appreciation to LG's Whispering Pines for their love and care of John while he was a patient there. Family and friends may gather on Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016, from 5-8 PM at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 24832 US-12 East, Edwardsburg. At 7:30 PM there will be a Prayer Service conducted by Father Joe McCormick. The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, Aug. 15, 2016, at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 24832 US-12, East, where all may gather for one hour before the service. Officiating will be Father Joe McCormick, Pastor. Interment will follow at Adamsville Cemetery with the U.S. Army Honor Guard and members of the Edwardsburg American Legion and the V.F.W. Honor Guard playing Taps, folding the US flag and conducting a ‘gun salute.' Memorial donations may be made to the Edwardsburg American Legion Post 365, P.O. Box 47, Edwardsburg, MI 49112-0047, for the ‘Parking Lot Improvement'. Arrangements are by the Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home, Edwardsburg, MI. Published in South Bend Tribune on Aug. 10, 2016
