SOUTH BEND - Joan "Joni" M. Niedbalski, 84, of South Bend, IN, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 in her home. She was born on May 15, 1930 to the late Eugene and Mary Ann (Glon) Rakowski in South Bend, IN, and was a lifelong area resident. Along with her parents; she was preceded in death by her brother, David Rakowski. Joan graduated in 1948 from South Bend Catholic High School. Mrs. Niedbalski retired in 1992 as a Computer Librarian, from The Associates, where she worked for 37 years. On February 4, 1950, as Joan M. Rakowski, she married Raymond J. Niedbalski at St. Adalbert Catholic Church in South Bend, IN. He died on October 18, 1999. Joan is survived by her daughter, Roseann (Sam) Vittorie of South Bend, IN; her son, Jacob "Jack" (Jamie) Niedbalski of Tavernier, FL; five grandchildren, Noell (Matthew) Hostetler; Andrea (Jason) Smolinski; Kellee Niedbalski; Jake Niedbalski; Michael (Stephanie) Carraway; one great-grandson, Ryne Smolinski; and her sister-in-law, Edythe Rakowski of South Bend, IN. Joan was an Honorary Member of Christ the King Parish since 1953. She was a diehard Notre Dame Football Fan. Joan loved to read and was a member of several card clubs, Euchre being her favorite. Joan was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who adored her family and spent every moment she could with them. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Sunday, September 14, 2014 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, where a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 15, 2014 at Christ the King Catholic Church.
