[N32982] Carole Ann Hook
December 18, 1936 - August 26, 2022

Carole Ann Kovacevich, 85, passed away on August 26, 2022 in her home at Story Point Granger. The youngest of six children, Carole Ann was born December 18, 1936 to Charles and Fannie Hook in Mishawaka, Indiana. She graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1955, and on March 9, 1957, she married Samuel A. Kovacevich in Santa Ana, California. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Kenneth Umbaugh and Ronald Hook and a sister, Doris Woodruff, as well as her husband of 61 years, Samuel, and her son, Michael Kenneth. Left to cherish Carole Ann’s memory are her daughter, Deborah (Timothy) Hileman, grandson Blake (Samantha) Kovacevich and two great grandsons. Two sisters, Kathryn Bonder and Betty Borton also survive her, as well as countless nieces, nephews and cousins. From a very young age, Carole was a voracious reader and enjoyed nothing more than to sit down with a good book. She read as many books as she could get her hands on, with a special fondness for romance novels and Nora Roberts books. She was a talented artist and left her family members with many beautiful pictures and hand-painted ceramics and porcelains that she had lovingly crafted. For many years, she created gorgeous Nativity sets for her sisters and nieces, each unique and individually designed. She dabbled a bit with poetry over the years, although few were privileged to read her writings. Carole Ann loved to travel, and along with her mother, traveled with her children across country on many adventures. Colorful are the stories we recall of summer road trips down Route 66 to visit family in southern California, trips to Mackinac Island and Gatlinburg, Tennessee during spring breaks and summer vacations. Ever adventurous and seemingly fearless, she drove a 30-foot motorhome on several trips to state parks and beaches along Lake Michigan with her children. She feared no big vehicle. Once the kids were grown, she and her mother loved to spend time in Bonita Beach, Florida. She enjoyed her trips to Hawaii and a couple of Caribbean cruises. She took special “Mother’s Day” trips with her daughter over the years that found them anywhere from Virginia, Sedona, San Francisco and Cancun and points in between. The door to Carole’s home was always open to friends and family, and friends of family. She welcomed her children’s friends and she treated them as her own “extended” family. To neighbors and their children, she was simply “Grandma Carole.” The family wishes to share their thanks and deep gratitude to the many caregivers at Story Point Assisted Living, and also to the nurses of Heart to Heart Hospice who cared for Carole during the last stage of her life. Their compassion and dedication to Carole, in whose care they were entrusted was of great comfort. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2022, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Palmer Funeral Home, Welsheimer North Chapel, 17033 Cleveland Rd., South Bend. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 2 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 616 Lincolnway East, Mishawaka, where friends may visit with the family one hour before the service. Carole Ann will be laid to rest next to her husband and son at Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Mishawaka, IN or to the St. Labre Indian School, P.O. Box 797, Ashland, MT 59003.
