James Dennis Szalay, 82, passed away peacefully at his home in Naples FL on Friday, February 3rd, 2023. Jim was born on August 8th, 1940 in South Bend IN, spending time over the years in Fort Myers FL, Gainesville GA then finally Naples FL. He was preceded in death by his parents Julius and Aletha (Helmlinger) Szalay, his sister Dolores Voss and granddaughter Ashley Ann Szalay. Jim is survived by his sister Loretta Schafer of Bonita Bay FL, his wife Karin (Gustafson) Szalay and his four children, Kimberly Szalay of South Bend IN, Kelly Price (Isaac Luck), Danial Szalay and Kari Szalay (Gregory Rando)all of Naples FL. Grandchildren Sierra Szalay(Matthew Fleming), Cory Szalay (Heather), Brandon Price(Jennifer Allman), Kathryn Ames(Brandon), Cal Jordan (Elizabeth Vale), Skylar Jordan(Sean Harrison) and six great-grandchildren. Jim will be dearly missed by his extended Gustafson family, may the memory of happy gatherings live on. After serving in the US Air Force, he was employed at Romy Hammes Ford before joining the South Bend Police Department in 1968 retiring in 1982. Known as Mr. Fix-It, he could build, rebuild or repair just about anything. Jim had a great fondness for the outdoors and all its creatures. Whether he was tinkering in his spotless garage, cruising in his pontoon boat or walking in the woods, he always had one of his beloved German Shepherds by his side and now Jim has reunited with the ones that have passed before him. Per his wishes cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
