Anthony “Tony” Zappia

MISHAWAKA - Anthony “Tony” F. Zappia, 92, of Mishawaka, passed away Monday evening, June 4, 2018, in Sanctuary at St. Paul's, South Bend. Tony was born May 11, 1926 in Mishawaka, a son of the late Frank and Rose (Fotia) Zappia, Sr. He was a 1945 graduate of Mishawaka High School. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. In 2015, Tony was pleased to attend Honor Flight for Veterans in Washington, D.C. Tony's employment over the years included Wheelabrator-Frye, Ball Band, and Studebaker's. He also owned and operated Zappia's Package Liquor and Heads Together Beauty Salon in Mishawaka. Tony was a life-long member of St. Monica Catholic Church. He was a member and at one time bartender at the DiLoreto Society. Tony was an avid Chicago Cubs fan as well as an avid Notre Dame football fan and scrap booker. Tony's surviving family includes three brothers, Joseph Zappia, Rocco (Sara) Zappia, and Frank (Thelma) Zappia, Jr; a sister, Pam (Sherm) Deal; a brother-in-law, Joseph Catanzarite; a sister-in-law, Kay Zappia; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Tony was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Saldana and Mary Catanzarite; two brothers, Patrick Zappia, Sr. and Dominic Zappia; and an infant brother, Antonio Zappia. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am on Friday, June 8, in St. Monica Catholic Church, 225 W. Mishawaka Ave., Mishawaka, with Rev. Jacob Meyer officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by VFW 360/American Legion 161 Burial Squad. Visitation is from 3 to 7 pm on Thursday in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka, with the Rosary being prayed at 7 pm. Visitation is also from 9 to 10 am Friday in church.Memorials are suggested to St. Monica Catholic Church. An online guest book is available at www.goethalswells.com.
