MISHAWAKA, IN - Roger Curtis Nimtz, 73, of Mishawaka died Tuesday, December 11 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center following an illness. Roger was born on May 29, 1945 in Sebewaing, MI, the son of the late Arlene and Arthur Nimtz. He remarried on July 13, 1985 to Betty Lou Hart who survives. Also surviving are two daughters from his first marriage, Vicki L. Nimtz and Wendy S. Comstock (Jeremy) both of Spring Hill, FL; two step-sons, Brian L. Hart (Robin) of South Bend and Eric A. Hart (Stacy) of Fishers, IN, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Rennis A. Nimtz and Terry L. Nimtz. Roger grew up in Sebewaing, MI and graduated from Sebewaing High School in 1963. He attended college at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, MI. In 1965, he moved to South Bend and after college worked at Charles W. Cole and Son/ Engineers and Architects. Two months later he was drafted into the military as a helicopter Crew Chief and Gunner and served in Bien Hoa, Vietnam. He returned home and finished his tour of duty at Sharpe Army Depot in California. He returned to South Bend and worked for Cole and Associates for 22 years, then for HealthQuest for two years, and MPA (Matthews, Purucker, and Anella) until he retired in 2007. In retirement he worked on drafting side jobs at home until 2013. Roger was a member and served as president for Good Shepherd Lutheran Church for eleven years and taught Sunday School for 10 years. He was active in Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Junior Achievement, and was a volunteer in Volunteer in Police Service (VIPS) from 2003 until recently, where he served as co-chair and was on the Executive Board. Roger was a life member of VFW Post 4115 in Sebewaing, a life member of Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) #1027 in South Bend, and American Legion Post #303. His interests included woodworking, bowling, and helping others. Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, December 20 at Coalbush United Methodist Church, 15977 Jackson Rd., Mishawaka with Rev. Amber Karkosky officiating. Committal services and burial will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. The family will receive friends from 2 until 6 p.m. Wednesday, December 19 in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd., South Bend.
