SOUTH BEND - John Anthony Wantuch, lovingly adopted at birth on November 7, 1949 by Anthony A. and Frances J. (Pakuszewski) Wantuch, born in Gary, IN to Virginia V. Pryblo (and Edward Pinkowski), passed away peacefully on November 23, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer. Raised in Michigan City, he graduated from Elston High School and attended Fort Wayne Technical College. On August 19, 1978, in Holy Family Catholic Church, he married his best friend and true love, Marianne Lies, and made their home in South Bend. John retired from Bethlehem Steel Corp., from the U.S. Army (22 years), and from the LaPorte County Government Offices (10-year County Veterans Service Officer). He was the past owner of two small businesses, and worked for several other small companies between his full-time positions. When John was not working, he enjoyed golf, camping, Polka music, fishing, Green Bay and ND football, American Flyer model trains, his Ford T-bird, his work for veterans and making family and friends laugh. He was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. He was also a proud life member of AMVETS Post 911 (past commander), St. Joseph Young Men's Society-Michigan City, VFW Post 1954; and a member of American Legion Post 357 (past VSO), 40/8, and Falcons Nest 684. To cherish his memory, John leaves behind his loving wife of 38 years, cousin Leo (Juanita) Wantuch, adopted sister Alexandra Young (aka Patricia Wantuch), half-brother Jim (Nonie) Gabbink, two half-sisters, nephew Brad (Debby) Lubiniecki, many other loving cousins, nieces and nephews. Marianne wishes to send special love and thank you to cousin Leo & Juanita Wantuch, friends Rich Topolski, Greg Morse, Rick Wincek, neighborhood friends, members of AMVETS Post 911, Dr. Rashid Khan and staffs at Michiana Hematology Oncology and the Center for Hospice. Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 27th from 2:00 to 6:00 PM at Hanley and Sons Funeral Home “Southwest Chapel” located at State Road 23/W. Ireland Road, South Bend with a Rosary to be prayed at 3:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 28th at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 3526 Saint Johns Way, South Bend with Father Glenn Kohrman officiating. A private family burial will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI. The family requests memorial contributions be made to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 3526 Saint Johns Way, South Bend, IN 46628, the Center for Hospice, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545 or to the charity of donor's choice.
