SOUTH BEND - Eugene L. Lizzi, 88, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2014, in Healthwin Specialized Care Facility. Gene was born on August 27, 1926, in South Bend, to Carl Lizzi Sr. and Julia (Fabian) Lizzi, and was a lifelong resident. He retired after 27 years on the South Bend Fire Department. He started April 3, 1951; on June 5, 1978, he retired. He served as a Private, a Lieutenant, and then Captain. He also worked as head of the Inspection Bureau for Arson and then he was Battalion Chief. Gene was a cook for the fire department for many years. After retiring he was the security guard at LaSalle High School and also John Adams High School. Later he then worked as a groundskeeper for St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. When he was young he sang in the choir. In his earlier days he enjoyed cooking, fishing, card playing and crossword puzzles. He always enjoyed being around his family and friends. Gene honorably served his country in the United States Navy during W.W. II. He was a member of the V.F.W. 8748 where he was a bartender. On May 10, 1947, in St. Stanislaus Church, he married Gloria Nowakowski, who preceded him in death on November 25, 2008. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Carl Lizz Jr. and Andrew Lizzi. Gene is survived by his daughter, Julie (Thomas) DeVon of South Bend, Indiana; his son, Michael (Julie Gonzalez) Lizzi of South Bend, Indiana; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Nina Lizzi of South Bend, Indiana. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 6, 2014, in St. Stanislaus Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. today in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. To send online condolences, please visit Kaniewski.com.
