Ruth Szerencse

Jan. 26, 1924 -- Nov. 20, 2006

South Bend Tribune 11/22/2006

Ruth Szerencse, 80, on November 20, 2006, Ruth succumbed to a courageous and brave battle with cancer. Ruth was born in Upland, California, on January 26, 1924, to Harvey and Maude (Andrews) Berkey. Being an only child she was the light of their life and a 1944 graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. On July 28, 1951, Ruth married Eugene Szerencse who survives. In their 55 years together they led by example how to have a strong and loving marriage to their children, Becky (Jerry) Larsen of Elkhart, Indiana, Mark (Cathy) Szerencse of South Bend, Kate Sinclair of South Bend and Michelle (Randy) Merrill of Mishawaka, Indiana. Ruth was able to see 12 grandchildren, most of whom have grown into adults living a productive and happy life as they take with them a lot of her qualities: honesty, integrity, and a strong work ethic. Along with raising a family, Ruth worked in the import- export business.

Ruth was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church where she was a member of the Rosary Makers Society, provided rides to church for the elderly, and visited the sick and elderly in nursing homes. Ruth was also a volunteer in the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for the past 13 years. Ruth's deep faith sustained her through her life until the end when a new life she firmly believes in begins. No one will ever match her Hungarian paprikash, kiefles or kolatch. Ruth was a great cook who delighted in cooking for her family and being with them. We love you and thank you, and hold you in our minds, hearts and souls.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 PM Friday, November 24, 2006, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 5 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon Saturday, November 25, 2006, in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. The family would like to thank Dr. Method and his staff for caring for Ruth during her 5 1/2-year battle with cancer. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637. "Their care and compassion are priceless."
