Passed on after an extended illness, Dorothy was born in Chicago, IL, February 14, 1933, to Jack J. and Helen K. Kohen, who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death was her husband, Burton Jaffe. Survived by a son, Michael (Joan) Jaffe, grandsons, David Jaffe and John Jaffe, all of South Bend, IN, daughter, E.S. Niespodziany of Mishawaka, and survived by special daughter, Marisela Sandoval of South Bend, whose countless hours of care for mother made her final time much more comfortable. Dorothy was a graduate of Central High School of South Bend and Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, with a degree in education.
Dorothy was a very active member of the community in various organizations. She was a life member of the Hadassah organization, B'nai B'rith, and the Sinai Sisterhood, and was active until she became ill. She also directed fundraising events to assist aid to Israel and immigrants in need. Dorothy was instrumental in a multitude of Democratic political fundraising events and devoted countless hours assisting senators and congressman with their campaigns. She worked for many years at South Bend's Democratic headquarters as a coordinator in a variety of positions. She was a member of the League of Women Voters and was very active in South Bend politics. Retiring from the St. Joseph County Parks Department, she was a member of the board of directors for the county park system where she worked diligently to make the county park system the best it can be. She held numerous job duties and stayed on after retirement to assist the staff as a volunteer. She was a also a devoted member of the Park Department board of directors. She enjoyed traveling and made several trips to Europe and the Middle East. She enjoyed helping people and was an inspiration to all. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Funeral services were held Friday, March 24, at 11 a.m. in the McGann Hay, Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, 435 S. Ironwood Drive. Burial was at the Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery.
