Lester W. Gordon
Oct. 21, 1917 - July 23, 2015
Mr. Lester W. Gordon, 97, of Rochester, passed away at 3:30 a.m. Thursday, July 23, 2015, at Hickory Creek at Rochester. In Fulton County, on Oct. 21, 1917, Lester William Gordon was born a treasured son of Frank and Sophia Tetzlaff Gordon. As the second youngest of eight children, he shared his childhood with four sisters and three brothers. Following a double promotion during his formative years in education, Lester graduated from Rochester High School in 1934.
On Dec. 8, 1948, Lester and Margaret Mary Maglecic were married at the First Christian Church, Rochester, by Rev. Grant Blackwood. They shared 46 years of life’s adventures. Together they raised a wonderful son, Gary. Sadly, Margaret passed away on Oct. 16, 1994. A lifelong farmer, Lester tended to the farm in Rochester Township. There he raised calves and hogs. He, Margaret and Gary annually planted a truck patch garden. Back in the day when their sweetcorn became a bumper crop, it was sold for 35 cents per dozen. Along with farming, Lester was a wholesaler as an egg buyer and seller for Rochester Produce for many years. Later, he was employed as a dispatcher for the Fulton County Highway Department retiring in 1991. An avid card player, Lester especially enjoyed many spirited games of euchre while at home at Hickory Creek. He played all kinds of card games, but euchre was his strongest suit. He held memberships with the Fraternal Order of the Eagles 852, Leroy Shelton American Legion Post 36 and the IOOF Lodge. Left to cherish his memory are his son, Gary Gordon, of Rochester, and several nieces and nephews and his family at Hickory Creek. Preceding Lester in death are his parents; wife; four sisters, Pauline Cranmer, Ida Shafer, Josephine Warner and Mabel Umbaugh; three brothers, Arthur, Howard and Carl Gordon. Lester was the last living member of the Frank Gordon family. Gary wishes to thank the Hickory Creek family for their professionalism, love, support and tender loving care given to his Dad since 2008, making him feel at home. A celebration of the life of Lester W. Gordon will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 27, 2015, at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester, with his nephew, Rev. Russell Gordon, officiating. Friends may visit the family from 1-4 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Monday.
Interment will be in the Rochester IOOF Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Hickory Creek Activity Fund, 340 E. 18th St., Rochester, IN 46975. Online expressions of sympathy may be made to his family at www.goodfamilyfh.com.
