[N5498] Sturgis; James Richard (Dick) GATES, 72, died Nov. 23, 1988, at the Humana Hospital, Dade City, Fla.
He was born April 2, 1916, in Cleveland, Ohio, a son of Jay Craig and Alice (PUGH) GATES. On June 21, 1941, he married Justine Irene LAHRMAN in Fort Wayne, Ind. He graduated from Fort Wayne International Business College. He served with the U.S. 9th Air Force in World War II, including the Normandy Invasion, receiving five distinguished honors. For 35 years, he was employed at International Harvester and established Gates Nursery and Garden Center, Sturgis in 19795. He was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church, Sturgis, St. Marys Episcopal Church, Dade City, the Kiwanis Club, Indiana Masonic Lodge, KVLNA and the American Rose Society. He was a past president of the Midwest Unit of WBCCI. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Carolyn GATES LYONS, Vicksburg, and Barbara GATES DICK, Lapeer; one son, James R. GATES, M.D., Austin, Minn.; six grandchildren; three sisters, Margery GATES and Eleanor ARTLEY, both of Elkhart, Ind., and Alice HANNAH, Walnut Creek, Calif.; and one brother, Robert GATES, D.D.S., Elkhart. Cremation has taken place. A Requiem Mass is at 3 p.m. Tuesday at St. Johns Episcopal Church, Sturgis, with the Rev. Jack D. Bowling officiating. Relatives and friends may call after a Mass at the church.
