ELKHART -- Margery M. Gates, 90, of 28070 C.R. 24, died at 12:27 p.m. Tuesday (June 2, 2009) in Hubbard Hill Estates.
She was born Feb. 12, 1919, in Elkhart to Jay C. and Alice Gates. She is survived by one brother, Dr. Robert (Bernice) Gates of Sarasota, Fla.; one sister, Alice Hannah of Walnut Creek, Calif.; one brother-in-law, Dr. Thomas Artley of Elkhart; and one sister-in-law, Justine Gates of Kalamazoo, Mich. She was preceded in death by her siblings, J. Richard Gates and Eleanor Artley. Miss Gates graduated from Elkhart High School in 1937 and from South Bend College of Commerce in 1939. She retired as the executive secretary to the vice president of sales and marketing at Bendix Corp., South Bend, in 1976. She was a member of the Elkhart Art League and a life member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Elkhart, and Northern Indiana Artists Inc. Miss Gates was a water color artist who painted "Sanctuary," and had recently donated three paintings to the Midwest Museum of Art. She traveled extensively with other artists.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be at a later date in St. John's Episcopal Church, Elkhart. Elkhart Cremation Services, 2100 W. Franklin St., Elkhart, is assisting with arrangements.
Memorials may be given to the church.
