SOUTH BEND - Arthur E. Smudzinski, 71, of South Bend, IN passed away at 9:07 p.m. Sunday, April 2, 2017 at Memorial Hospital. He was born on October 5, 1945 in South Bend, IN to the late Harry and Evelyn Smudzinski. On December 17, 1966 in South Bend, IN, he was united in marriage to the former Barbara Riffle. Art is survived by his wife of fifty years, Barbara Smudzinski. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Clement Smudzinski. He will be greatly missed by many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law as well as many nieces and nephews. Art was a lifelong resident. He served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Art was a Captain for the South Bend Fire Department, Portage Township where he served for twenty-three years. He also worked in chemical production for Dental Hura. Art loved feeding the birds and fishing. A Prayer service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 7, 2017 at Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St. South Bend, IN, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 56405 S. Mayflower Road, South Bend, IN 46619. Graveside services and burial will follow at Sumption Prairie Cemetery, South Bend, IN. Friends may visit with the family from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Palmer Funeral Home.Contributions in memory of Arthur E.
