William Emery Toth passed away peacefully on November 17, 2010, in Southport. He was 85 years old. Emery was preceded in death by his parents, Nandor and Rose Toth. Emery is survived by his beloved wife, Joyce Smith Toth. Emery and Joyce’s marriage of 64 years provided a wonderful example of true love and devotion for his family. He is also survived by his loving daughters, Pamela Huxhold, Cheryl Nickerson and Jill O’Connor. Emery will forever be held in highest admiration by his grandchildren Michael, Janet, Ashley, Matthew and Sean. He is also survived by his three great-grandchildren, and his sister-in-law. VelRae Smith Singer. Emery was born May 8, 1925, and raised in South Bend, Indiana. He was a basketball player for South Bend Central, where he played for Johnny Wooden. He passed up a scholarship to UCLA to serve his country in the Marine Corps during World War II and continue his basketball. After he left the Marines, he started his career with GE, where he retired after 40 years. Joyce and Emery retired to Oak Island, where he enjoyed his life as an avid golfer, and later as an emerging artist. He was an active member of Ocean View United Methodist Church for 18 years. Emery will be remembered for his generous spirit, his sense of humor, his integrity, his “ocean specials” and his overall love of life. He will be deeply missed. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 20, at 11 a.m. at Ocean View Methodist Church, Oak Island.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Emery’s name to Ocean View United Methodist Church, 8400 E. Oak Island Drive, Oak Island, NC 28465.
